Properties Worthy of Preservation

Name: Odd Fellows Building

Address: 427 Park Row, Bowling Green, KY

Date of Construction: 1892

Erected for the Aeolian Lodge in 1892, the Oddfellows Lodge is one of the finest architectural works in the Downtown Commercial Historic District. Borrowing such elements as the projecting bay windows and the paired, arched windows set in blind arches from Gothic architecture, the designer created a façade with a striking verticality that is appropriate for buildings facing Fountain Square Park. Name: James Erasmus Potter Residence

Address: 1310 College St, Bowling Green, KY

Date of Construction: 1800s

The James Erasmus Potter house, located on the corner of College and Thirteenth Streets, was built by the son of Pleasant J. Potter during the 1880s. At the time that the house was built, the owner was involved in the banking business with his father and two brothers. The house, which has in time come to be locally dubbed the “Potter Castle,” is a Queen Anne Victorian structure and features a turret, balconies, bay windows, and elaborate wood trim.  After the Potter family suffered financial setbacks about 1905, the house passed through a number of families, eventually becoming subdivided into twelve rental apartments A brick façade was added across the sides and front of the house during the 1970’s, covering much of the distinctive Victorian exterior. Like the Potter finances, the house itself has through the years fallen on hard times and has been allowed to deteriorate almost beyond the point of recovery/. Certain features, like the stained glass windows in the parlor, ornate staircase, and six different elaborate fireplaces in the bedrooms and living areas, attest to the abiding beauty of the home and make this a local landmark worthy of restoration.
